Interview with Dr. Wendy Fisher

  1. What inspired the creation of this Online Professional Master’s program in Computer Science?

The program was inspired by a strategic initiative at Mines to broaden access to graduate education while addressing the evolving needs of today’s workforce. We wanted to create a flexible, applied program that equips professionals with the skills necessary to thrive in dynamic tech environments, all while ensuring academic excellence.

  1. How does this program align with Mines’ goals for graduate education?

This program directly supports Mines’ mission to attract more students to non-thesis graduate programs and increase enrollment overall. By offering an accessible, flexible pathway for working professionals and those with diverse educational backgrounds, we’re fostering a broader reach while maintaining our high standards of quality.

  1. What sets this program apart from other online computer science master’s programs?

What makes this program unique is its applied focus, modular track system, and interdisciplinary curriculum. Students can choose from tracks like Applied Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Analytics and Project Management, and Advanced Software Technologies. These tracks are designed to build expertise in high-demand areas while allowing students to tailor their education to their interests.

  1. How does the program ensure accessibility to a diverse audience?

We’ve intentionally designed the program to accommodate students with varying schedules, geographies, and professional commitments. With courses available in 8-week, 16-week, or summer sessions, students can customize their learning journey without disrupting their careers or personal lives. Additionally, we’ve minimized prerequisites to make the program accessible to those without a formal computer science background.

  1. What innovative approaches are incorporated into the curriculum?

The program emphasizes hands-on learning, industry-relevant projects, and opportunities to collaborate with industry partners. Capstone projects, leadership-focused coursework, and entrepreneurial pathways ensure that students graduate with practical experience and a competitive edge.

  1. How does the program prepare students for industry demands?

Each track is aligned with industry trends and designed in consultation with our advisory board, which includes industry partners. The interdisciplinary approach and focus on applied skills ensure that students are job-ready, whether they’re entering the workforce for the first time, transitioning to new roles, or advancing in their current careers.

  1. What else would you like prospective students to know about this program?

This program is your chance to gain cutting-edge skills from a world-renowned institution, all while balancing your existing commitments. Whether you’re passionate about machine learning, cybersecurity, or advanced software technologies, we have a pathway for you.
